JUST the mere mention of Minang cuisine often gets hungry diners salivating.

The thought of those fiery curries peppered liberally with bird’s eye chillies and creamy coconut milk-based gravy redolent with spices is hard to resist.

There are plenty of restaurants offering the popular cuisine but nothing beats having traditional Minang dishes in Negri Sembilan – the home of Minang cuisine in Malaysia.

This Ramadan, Grand Lexis Port Dickson is showcasing authentic kampung-style Minang favourites such as Ikan Sembilan Berlada (spicy catfish), Telur Itik Masak Lemak Cili Api (duck egg in a coconut milk-based gravy) and Ikan Masak Asam Tempoyak (fish cooked with fermented durian paste).

Hotel executive sous chef Zukri Mohamad said they wanted to ensure guests would have a typical balik kampung experience.

“Many diners crave the simple flavours of kampung-style dishes during Ramadan. It is uncomplicated food cooked with the freshest of ingredients and seasonally-available produce,” he said.

Hardly anything can rival the rich flavours of a masak lemak dish. Made with coconut milk, turmeric and a souring agent (usually asam keping or belimbing), the gravy can be cooked with a variety of meats and seafood.

“A popular version favoured by kampung folk is the Telur Itik Masak Lemak, which is rich and a meal in itself.

“All the kampung-style dishes on the menu were carefully selected as we wanted our guests to sample the best of our cuisine,” he said.

Besides these mouth-watering kampung dishes, the hotel’s Duyung Restaurant is also serving Middle Eastern delights such as Grilled Whole Lamb with Middle Eastern spices, mutton curry and nasi Arab.

The Ramadan buffet features a rotating menu of more than 100 dishes daily that include freshly prepared salads and kerabu, soups, curries and Western-style dishes too.

Stalls will be set up within the restaurant, serving popular favourites such as ais kacang, roasted lamb shoulder, murtabak, noodles and congee.

The Ramadan buffet at Grand Lexis is on from 6.30pm to 10pm, daily until July 28.

The buffet is priced at RM88 nett per adult and RM43 nett per child (between four and 12 years).

The hotel is also offering promotional room rates during the period which includes the breaking of fast meal and sahur or breakfast.

Muslim guests can use the prayer facilities at the hotel to perform their Maghrib and Isyak prayers.
