Who says vegetarians can’t enjoy Satay? Check out how to make this Malaysian favourite dish uses vegetarian meat (soy meat) and other spices!
Recipe Ingredient
- 400g vegetarian chicken, cut into strips
- Marinade (A)
- 2 stalks lemongrass
- 2cm piece galangal
- 2cm fresh turmeric
- 3-4 candlenuts
- 2 dried chillies
- Spice (B)
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp fennel powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp tamarind juice
- 2 tbsp oil
Instructions
- Blend ingredients for marinade (A) with a little water in a food processor to a fine paste. Pour paste into a mixing bowl and add spice (B) to mix.
- Marinate vegetarian chicken with the combined marinade ingredients. Leave aside for 2 to 3 hours.
- Thread the marinated vegetarian chicken strips onto bamboo skewers and pan-fry or grill the satay skewers until golden and slightly charred. Serve with satay sauce.
Why is it called Meatless Satay, when one of the ingredients is chicken?

It is vegetarian chicken which is mock meat that is available from any shop or market selling vegetarian mock meat. Hope this helps.
