LEAVE the factory-made peanut butter on the supermarket shelf. It’s super-easy and much cheaper to make it yourself because you need one ingredient only – peanuts. Your homemade peanut butter won’t have any preservatives and you make it sugar- or salt-free as you like (although a little salt does intensify the flavour).

Churning your own peanut butter requires a good food processor or a heavy duty blender. Sorry, that pestle and mortar or trusty old-fashioned tumbuk won’t work here.

So with just one ingredient, all you need to do is place the skinless peanut kernels into the machine – you can leave them bare, or lightly toast them for more flavour – and blitz away until the nuts are a creamy paste. That’s all of five minutes.

Remember, your personal peanut butter will never be as smooth as those store-bought jars. And because it’s all-natural, you’ll need to keep it refrigerated.
