“A stunning first impression was not the same thing as love at first sight. But surely it was an invitation to consider the matter. “
Lois McMaster Bujold , 2003
There is no need to mention how important one’s first impression is – especially someone who might be your potential future husband or wife.
Trying to gulp down an extra-large coke might scare away your date, so are these 8 food/dishes.
Petai, Sambal Belacan, Durian…
Are you serious? Do you really want to order sambal petai the first time you meet your crush? One burp is all it’ll take to scare away your date and people 10-meter radius around you.
Buffets
Admit it, as Malaysian we all tried to go for the 3rd round to make the buffet worthy. While you are having your little “Man vs Food” challenge, your date might be wondering if you have starved for 2 weeks in a deserted island.
Seafood, Especially Crab
Chewing or cracking your crab will only add to the awkward pauses in your conversation. Chili crab sauce is also notoriously known to splash on clothes, whether it is yours or your date’s.
Banana Leaf Rice
It’s difficult to look at someone romantically as you are trying to eat with your fingers, or asking for extra curry, not to mention the food coma that comes after.
Expensive Restaurants
If you think having dinner in an expensive restaurant is a good idea to impress your date, you might need to re-consider. A quick survey in the admin’s office shows 9 out of 10 dates will find it uncomfortable and intimidating.
Fast Food
Fast foods are meant to be fast, not for a date. Your date might even think you are going to sell him/her MLM products or insurance packages.
Lastly, don’t ask your date where and what to eat. If you are not sure, just ask this: “Guess where I will take you to eat?”. And take the first answer.
Good luck!
