GATHERING around the table and enjoying the most important dinner of the year is a Chinese New Year tradition.

At Qing Zhen, three set menus have been drawn up for the spring festival.

The eight or nine-course set menus – Prosperity, Auspicious and Supreme Dragon Prosperity – are priced at RM888++, RM1,08++ and RM1,288++ respectively.

We were treated to a selection of specialties from the Auspicious and Supreme Dragon Prosperity sets recently, starting with tossing the must-have Salmon Yee Sang.

It was followed by Supreme Seafood Soup with Fresh Scallops, Prawns and Crab Roe.

Qing Zhen executive chef Chew Mun Pong said the soup, flavoured with oyster sauce, chicken stock powder, salt and sugar, was light on the palate.

“It’s not too overpowering and the scallops add a hint of sweetness to the broth,” he said.

Noting an increase in requests to remove shark’s fin from the menu, Chew made sure that the three Chinese New Year sets did not feature shark’s fin soup.

However, the restaurant could still provide the delicacy on demand.

Next served was Steamed Cod with Chef’s Signature Sauce, which was a combination of water, Japanese soy sauce, rock sugar and coriander.

We also sampled Salad Chicken, Oven Baked Fresh Prawns with Superior Stock and Braised Mushrooms with Pacific Clam, Garden Green and Dried Oyster.

Fried Rice in Lotus Leaf was another dish we enjoyed.

“We steamed the rice together with yam, chicken, dried shrimps and mushrooms, then wrap them in lotus leaf,” Chew explained.

Desserts included Sweetened Soy Bean with Lotus Seed and Pak Hup, and Pan-Fried Sliced Crispy Nian Gao (sticky cake).

The Chinese New Year set menus are available until Feb 6, and the Salmon Yee Sang and Jelly Yee Sang are available also for lunch, dinner and takeaways at RM48++ and RM118++.
