REASONABLE prices, lively colours and a cute mascot are The Crazy Bites’ strategy for attracting hungry families in the most competitive battleground for eateries in Subang Jaya.

Business partners Johan Yee and Edward Kan based the restaurant on the Australian casual dining concept, which is already very common in Malaysia, but they needed an eye-catching brand image in order to stand out in busy SS15.

The desire to have a family-oriented concept that would appeal to children led to the creation of their cute and hungry mascot, Kirikuru, whose name is derived from the sound of a growling stomach.

The restaurant’s menu features a variety of burgers, pasta, pizza, Western breakfast items and a few rice dishes.

One of their signature burgers is the Ox Bites (RM13.80 à la carte), a beef burger made from imported Australian beef, cheese, lettuce, gherkin and tomato relish.

The patty is juicy and flavourful when freshly made, but many of their customers who do not eat beef opt for their chicken burgers.

Rooster Bites (RM13.80 à la carte) (top pic), as it is named, uses the tender meat from the chicken leg and also includes a fried egg in addition to the common ingredients in all of their burgers.

Unlike traditional round pizzas, the pizzas at The Crazy Bites are made with a thin crust in an irregular shape about nine to 10 inches long, which is suitable for serving individual diners.

Johan’s Nasi Lemak uses rice that is infused with pandan extract to give it that distinct pandan flavour.

The Crazy Bites has a good selection of pastas, but Yee and Kan are fondest of the Clam Vongole (RM14.80 à la carte), whose strong, tasty broth will appeal most to clam lovers.

For those who cannot live without rice, Johan’s Nasi Lemak (RM13.80 à la carte) is a must-try. Served with boneless fried chicken, the sambal is just right, being neither too spicy nor too mild.

But unlike typical nasi lemak where the rice is steamed with pandan leaf to make it fragrant, the rice in Johan’s Nasi Lemak is infused with pandan extract to give it a distinct pandan flavour as well.

The Crazy Bites also has an interesting selection of snacks, such as the Jacket Potato (RM13.80 for three pieces), which comprises chicken chunks, tomato and mozzarella cheese baked in imported American potatoes together with the skin.

For a few additional ringgit, diners can upgrade to a set meal with sweet potato fries and a soft drink, but I also highly recommend trying some of the other drinks on the menu.

They have an enticing selection of hot and cold coffee, tea, chocolate drinks, milkshakes and mocktails, from which I can recommend the sweet and tangy Maracuja Pineapple Tea (RM8.80) as well as the refreshing, minty Earl Grey Mojito (RM9.80).

Understanding that diners these days are always looking to save a few ringgit on their meals, The Crazy Bites is having a special promotion where people can eat for just RM9.90 at any hour of the day.

The Hawaiian Chicken Pizza. The restaurant’s pizzas are made with a thin crust in an irregular shape.

The promotion will apply to three different items on the menu for each day of the week and comes with a soft drink, with the option of a drink upgrade for an additional RM5.
