PETALING Jaya is a landmark known to most city dwellers as a banking district but if you love to makan, there are some coffee shops in this city that can pull out some surprises.
This is also where I conduct my banking during the first week of the month.
And speaking of discoveries, I found a stall serving Garoupa fishball noodles in Hock Lim coffee shop in (Lat 03 05 928 N, Long 101 38 725 E) Jalan 52/18, Petaling Jaya.
This came as a big surprise to me as there aren’t too many places that can dish out such a good noodle dish.
The stall is called ‘Min Yee’ fish ball noodles and specialises in Teo Chew-style fishballs and porridge.
What caught my attention is the Loong Tann (estuary garoupa) fillet noodles and fishballs.
This is the stall’s speciality and a bowl costs RM18.
To me, price was no object and after tasting what this stall could offer, I must say that my hard-earned money was well-spent.
The portions are decent and the estuary garoupa slices are fresh.
You can only get such dishes in Sabah and Sarawak but the great cook at this stall made my trip to PJ New Town worth every ringgit and sen.
Apart from the Loong Tann noodles, you can order the fishball noodles at RM5 a bowl.
On a seasonal-basis, the stall also serve the Kau-Yue meen (Tenggiri or Spanish Mackerel noodles).
A bowl would cost about RM13.50 and since the fish is served fresh, it is a break from the norm.
Hock Lim coffee shop is not hard to locate as it is in the heart of PJ New Town.
Keep your eyes open for a corner coffee shop and if you drive, make it a point to park at the covered carpark opposite the Chemistry Department.
