CHEAP makan stalls are few and far between these days – especially in the Klang Valley.
And taxi drivers are the best source of information.
I chanced upon a cabbie by the name of Sugumaran who told me about a stall at the Medan Selera Wawasan in Jalan SS3/33, Petaling Jaya.
He said the makan place was one of the best and cheapest around when it comes to Indian food.
K.C. Lam, an acquaintance of mine, confirmed this.
Later, Chan How Nean, another old friend, said he was a regular customer at the stall.
So, after having heard many good things about the food, I decided to give the stall a try.
I made my way to SS3 in Petaling Jaya but I got lost somewhere there.
Enjoying the meal: People come from all over the township to eat at the stall.
I ended up at the Medan Selera Sukom in Sungai Way.
While combing the area, a mak cik asked: “Cari apa dik?” (What are you looking for?).
I asked her about a hawker centre that serves cheap Indian food and she pointed me in the right direction.
The friendly lady was so helpful and I found the makan place in no time.
As a matter of fact, Selera Wawasan is very near to my in-laws’ place.
The Indian stall occupies four lots in the hawker centre and to be honest, I think it brings some life to this rather gloomy-looking place.
I made my way to the stall and noticed an elderly man manning the counter.
“Hello, having your makan ah? You don’t seem to be from around here. First time?” he asked.
The man explained that it was a self-service stall and pointed out the owner to me.
I then helped myself to the spread and picked up a piece of fried chicken, three vegetables and some long beans in gravy.
The bill came up to RM7.50, inclusive of a teh-o limau ais.
Satisfying: This simple and tasty meal onlycosts RM6.
Quality wise, I’d say that this is one of the best Indian stalls around.
I love the tasty fried chicken and the curry is as good as it gets.
To sum it up, I would give this stall 9 out of 10 on the Samo-scale.
Later, I spoke to the owner, Pandiyan, who told me that he opened only for lunch.
“People come from all over the township and I have a few regular customers who are Japanese,” he added.
What I find interesting here is that the people, including the owner, are very helpful and friendly.
Pandiyan said his two uncles were helping him out at the stall to overcome the shortage of staff.
