SALADS may not be necessarily boring and tasteless. Fresh crispy leaves with a combination of fruits and vegetables can create magic on the taste buds if paired well with an awesome dressing.
A hearty salad is still bound to leave you satisfied just like your favourite serving of something sinful. Being a salad lover myself, I am a huge fan of raw and cooked vegetable combinations with citrus and seeds thrown in.
I usually avoid heavy dressings because it can sometimes overpower the natural flavour of the other ingredients. However, during my recent visit to the Daily Grind in Bangsar Village I in Bangsar, I discovered that with a clever combination, you can make a salad with heavy dressing work.
With that, my new favourite salad is the Roast Pumpkin Salad from the restaurant that specialises in gourmet burgers!
Reasonably priced (as compared to other restaurants of the same standard) at RM20, the serving is hearty and eye-catching. I found the pumpkin bits, which were roasted to perfection, soft and warm with a creamy texture.
It went well with the fresh rocket leaves, radicchio, crispy croutons, rich Parmesan shavings and the tangy mustard and honey dressing.
“It’s also my favourite salad here. But of course, our specialities are still our burgers!” said senior sales and marketing manager Selena Mak.
With a simple philosophy to serve homemade quality burger patties using fresh ingredients, all patties whether beef, chicken or lamb are made with prime cuts of meat and ground on the premises before being weighed and formed by hand into patties.
“We do not add anything to our patties apart from seasoning and for beef burgers, we use a combination of tenderloin and knuckles to have a burger that is juicy and moist,” said Mak, adding that a typical beef patty was 180g.
The restaurant also makes its own ketchup, chilli and other sauces.
Dining in a burger place, I tried the Japanese Yodel Burger and the Down by the Sea Burger. The former was a thick beef patty smothered with cheese fondue sauce, sauteed mushrooms and topped with Portobello tempura.
The beef was tender and juicy but to get the best of it, one has to have it warm. The same also went for the Portobello tempura. It also came with side dishes of fries and salad.
The second burger came filled with fresh red snapper fillets with herb, breadcrumbs and cheese crust served with tartar sauce. If you are a big fan of Stuffed Jalapeno Peppers, you might find the ones served at the restaurant quite nice.
Stuffed and fried with almond cream cheese, the Jalapenos were simple pleasures.
The Daily Grind also offers a variety of dishes that appeal to the majority of casual diners. One can opt for dishes like the Barbecued Manly Beef Ribs, Slow Cooked Lamb Stew and Chicken Maryland.
I finished off with a grand slice of the Red Velvet Cake over green tea. Mak insisted that I should try the restaurant’s amazing milk shakes but I was too stuffed to take in anything more.
“We make really, really good milk shakes you should try them some day,” she insisted. I told her I’d be back.
