ALTHOUGH renowned for their abalone dishes, the Ah Yat Abalone Forum Restaurant in Section 13, Petaling Jaya, also wants customers to savour other dishes they have on their menu.

“Many people think that we only serve abalone but that’s not true. We have an extensive menu of regular dishes and a good seafood selection that we want people to try as well,” said senior operation manager Joyce Chin.

Chief chef Lai Kwai Kin, who joined the establishment five months ago, has cooked up a set menu with individual servings that is perfect for small group outings, priced at RM138++ per pax.

For a limited time, there is even a complimentary set with every three sets purchased.

The set starts out with an appetiser of Japanese Mini Octopus served with a stuffed scallop.

“The octopus is served with a sprinkling of garlic and lime to add to the taste. The scallop is wrapped with bacon and pan-fried and can be eaten with the two thin slices of pancakes, just like a mini burger,” explained Lai.

The scallop was topped with a tangy sauce, which whets your appetite for the dishes that followed.

The next dish was the Double-boiled Fish Maw Soup with Chinese Herbs, which Lai said was one of the focus of the menu, besides the abalone dish.

“The soup is slow-cooked for six hours to get a nice and smooth texture,” he said.

Next up was the main attraction on the menu, the Stewed Fresh Yoshihama Abalone with Mushroom that was served together with the Stewed Hong Kong Kailan with Abalone Sauce.

Those who enjoy the chewy texture of the abalone would be able to savour each bite of the dish without any fancy accompaniments to distract the taste.

The Barbecued Lamb Racks with Herbs that came after the abalone was a pleasant surprise, considering that it was a typically Western dish.

The lamb rack was well-marinated and served grilled without any sauces so you get a fuller taste of the meat.

“We use New Zealand lamb because the meat is not so tough. There are seven different types of herbs in the marinade and it’s grilled with a little bit of honey. In a Chinese restaurant, we mostly served the dish well-done but if customers prefer to have it medium well, they can request for it,” said Lai.

The last dish in the menu was Braised E-Fu Noodle with Tiger Prawn, where the boiled noodles were tossed with a prawn gravy.

To cleanse the palate, Lai prepared the Chilled Assorted Fruits in Lime Juice which consisted of chopped up pieces of fruits served in a cocktail glass.

The outlet in Petaling Jaya has also introduced a steamboat set for customers who want to savour fresh seafood available in the restaurant.

A standard set priced at RM88++ for two to three persons comes with items like shrimp balls, fish paste, pork balls, prawn dumplings, beancurd, Chinese cabbage and mushrooms.

Additional items like red snapper, king grouper, Boston lobster, tiger prawns and fresh Australian scallops can be selected at additional cost.

As part of its sixth anniversary celebration, the outlet is also offering a barbecued suckling pig promotion for dine-in customers. From now until May, each pig is priced at RM138++ for either lunch or dinner.
