A STEAK in a sandwich sounds like a whopping huge meal, and those served at the Arthur’s Bar & Grill at the Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur is big in more ways than one.
The Steak Sandwich, which is also a signature dish at the restaurant, has a robust filling of sliced sirloin beef, mushroom and caramelised shallots, topped with fresh lettuce, in a foot-long bread.
One can also choose the doneness of the meat. The meal is also accompanied by a choice of French or Fat Fries.
Priced at RM35, it is big enough to be shared between two people if one finds it too big a portion. That aside, it is also big in taste. The caramelised shallots add a sweet tinge to the savoury mushroom flavours and the tender beef strips.
“The pricing is cheap for the amount you get. In fact, the menu speaks for itself as the portions are generous,” said the hotel’s communication executive Rohini, during a review at the newly renovated restaurant
Re-opened in December, the place now sports a fresh, masculine look in a modern Manhattan way. It has a stretched signature bar counter at the centre that creates a dynamic impact with a double height of fully-illuminated back bar bottle feature.
The bar offers a variety of beverages from iced-cold beers to signature cocktails, and a selection of wines by bottles and glass.
A vast adjoining dining area from the mid to the back of the restaurant provides a stylish and comfortable seating for 160 people.
The menu comprises both international and local favourites, and it’s well-known for its grilled items. A variety of meat cuts are available such as the sirloin, ribeye, tenderloin and T-bone. As for the fish, one can choose among salmon, cod, snapper and king prawns to be grilled.
Grills are served with choices of potatoes such as baked, mashed and fried, and vegetables including spinach, asparagus, green beans and mushrooms.
Strongly recommending the Steak Pie and Fish & Chips, Rohini insisted that we try the two dishes which are also restaurant signatures. The Steak Pie is a flavourful bake.
Also a big portion that could be shared, the dish is well-balanced in its use of spices and herbs. The meat is tender and juicy; and goes very well with the pastry.
Fresh and aromatic, the Fish & Chips, is a simple meal that is served in a classic style – piping hot with a lemon at the side.
Local favourites served are Malaysian Mixed Satay, Char Kway Teow and Seafood Mee Mamak. There are also desserts such as the Lemon Tart, Arthur’s Mud Cake, Apple Crumble and Creme Brulee on the menu.
The bar also features a three-piece band from 8.30pm to 12.45am from Mondays to Thursdays, and from 9pm to 1.15am over weekends and public holiday eves. This is the writer’s personal observation and is not an endorsement by StarMetro.
