TRADITION aside, there is something inexplicably comforting having a whole roasted turkey at the dinner table during Christmas dinners with family and friends.

The team at Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur has prepared a Roasted Turkey with Chicken Roulate Apricot Stuffing, served with cranberry sauce and giblet gravy, at its Coffee House Christmas buffet.

“We like to retain the traditional dishes for festivals. If we try to change the menu too much, it would not have that special touch anymore,” said executive sous chef Samsuddin Ahmad.

The highlight of the buffet would be the Roasted Turkey with Chicken Roulade Apricot Stuffing, served with cranberry sauce and a giblet gravy.

Samsuddin said the turkey is marinated with herbs like paprika, thyme and fresh garlic before being baked for at least an hour.

Before digging in to the roasted turkey, there is a variety of appetisers set up at the buffet table like Poached Prawns with Pamelo Salad, Smoked Salmon Roll with Asparagus, Fresh Yabbies with Mango Salsa, Julienne Beef on Half Boiled Egg and Smoked Chicken Breast with Fresh Fruits.

For a hearty warm starter, Samsuddin specially prepared the Boston Lobster Bisque with Crispy Pesto Toast for the spread, with the other options including the Fresh Wild Mushrooms with Truffle Oil and Cream of Roasted Pumpkin soups.

“We use lobsters from New Zealand and the soup is made with cream to give it a fuller texture,” he said.

Besides the traditional turkey, there will also be a selection of main dishes that would cater to suit different palates like the Kalamata Olive Tapanade Crusted Salmon with Braised Red Cabbage and Corn Salsa; Citrus Spiced New Zealand Trout with Zucchini Stew; Slipper Lobster with White Garlic Sauce; Aussie Rabbit Stew; and Baked Duck Breast with Sweet Orange.

The tasty local cuisine is not forgotten for the Christmas buffet and there will be separate counters serving a selection of Chinese, Malay, Indian specialities while those craving for a smoky barbecued treat would find a variety of seafood and meats available in the spread.

If the variety of desserts including the Christmas Pudding with Vanilla Sauce, English Fruitcake, Eggnog Sabayon and Creme Brulee is not enough to satisfy the sweet-toothed, two special mocktails have been created for the occasion.

The Rogue Santa (made with vanilla ice cream, yoghurt, honey, apple, pineapple and pitted cherries) and the St Nick’s (strawberry, kiwi, fresh orange and ginger ale) are available at RM18++ each.

Those who would like to host a party in the privacy of their own homes can also make orders starting Dec 1 for items like the Roasted Turkey, Roasted New Zealand Leg or Lamb Rack, Roasted Marinated Chicken and Roasted Beef Striploin. Just give the hotel a two-day notice by calling 03-4042 9888 ext 9014.

The Christmas eve buffet dinner is priced at RM98++ per person while the Christmas hi-tea at RM60++ per person and the Christmas buffet dinner at RM88++ per person.
