During a recent media experience, we were given a gastronomic tour at two restaurants involved in the campaign.

We started with the Tap-Eat-Save promotion items at Brotzeit German Bier Bar and Restaurant, which offers cuisine from Bavaria, the south-eastern state of Germany, and an assortment of premium beers from Paulaner.

Brotzeit’s friendly executive chef Helmut Murmann said they serve German food the Asian way.

Brotzeit also offers an assortment of sharing platters ideal for sharing among family and friends.

“In Germany, each diner has their own plate but we noticed that in Malaysia, people like to share their food, hence we have long tables,” he said.

He added that business has improved since they added photos to the menu.

“We have to adapt to changing tastes.

“Having a good butcher is essential too,” he said.

We started with the appetising Mozzarella Salat (RM26 for a small portion, RM42 for large) which was good for sharing. It was a mix of salad greens with mozzarella, vine-ripened and semi-dried tomatoes, grilled zucchini, olives, pesto sauce and garlic croutons, tossed with the house dressing.

Next up was the ham pizza Brotzeitflade Bayern (RM32), which is topped with belly bacon, leg ham, tomato sauce, mozzarella sauce, green and red bell peppers, cocktail onions and mushrooms.

We also sampled the Knoblauchwurst (pork garlic sausages) and Bockwurst (smoked pork sausages), which was unanimously voted as one of our favourite items.

The Pork and Bacon Burger (RM28) has a juicy homemade pork patty on a bed of lettuce and tomatoes topped with strips of bacon in between a lightly toasted bun and served with shoestring fries.

The Bauern Cordon (RM38) looks like a giant curry puff but has breaded escalope of pork stuffed with bacon, onions, mushrooms, parsley and melted cheese served with a choice of a side dish (for the review, we were served potato wedges).

In terms of dessert, we had the Sweet Savoury Duo (RM25), crispy chocolate-coated bacon and white chocolate mousse with lemon pepper marinated strawberries and apricot sauce.

I usually prefer my sweet items separate from the savoury but the chocolate-coated bacon blew us away! The chocolate and bacon was a heavenly combination and the mousse complemented it. The mousse caught us by surprise as we thought it was vanilla ice-cream at first.

“We use Swiss chocolates, we do not compromise on quality, hence the price,” Murmann said.

We also had Apfelstrudel (RM22), a traditional homemade apple strudel filled with cinnamon and lemon flavoured sliced apples, chopped walnuts, rum and raisins served with vanilla ice-cream.

It can be enjoyed on its own but the combination of apple strudel, walnuts and vanilla ice-cream was a match made in heaven.

The next venue in our gastronomic tour was Delicious, which recently added new items to its menu.

For starters, we had the Paprika Chicken salad (RM24.90).

The sweet potato, paprika chicken, rocket salad and hazelnut dressing was a unique combination.

If you want to try something other than your usual pasta dish, give the Salted Egg and Pumpkin Penne with Asparagus and Spinach a try.

We sampled the Papaya and Honey Yoghurt Crush and ice blended Tropical Ice Blast.

I love the Tropical Ice Blast, it was truly a refreshing treat especially on a hot afternoon.

For desserts, new items include Chocolate & Peanut Caramel Eclair and Strawberry & Passionfruit Eclair (RM7 each or three for RM17), Strawberry, Hazelnut & Lychee Pavlova with Chocolate Sauce (RM13.90) and Chocolicious Sundae with Strawberries and Pineapple in Glass (RM14.90).
