Food stall offers impressive nasi campur spread and an unusual experience.
HAVING lunch underneath a flyover is something I don’t do every day and I am not talking about hanging out with the homeless along the Klang River.
During a recent visit to Kampung Sungai Penchala in Kuala Lumpur, I discovered a makan place called Warung Cherry (N 03 09.624, E101 37.455), which is located underneath a flyover.
What’s intriguing about this eatery is that each time a car speeds above, the entire warung vibrates.
And when it comes to improvisation, the food stall owner has made it an art to decorate the void underneath the flyover.
Warung Cherry is located underneath a flyover that is part of the Penchala Link.
The positive aspect of this is the economic activity benefiting the local community rather than having some empty space overrun by drug addicts.
Well, speaking of the clientele here, I was quite surprised with the lunch crowd in this particular stall and their nasi campur spread was pretty impressive.
Even off-duty policemen can be seen having their lunch at this warung.
About the selection of nasi campur dishes here, one lauk in particular — the Sotong Masak Gulai Lemak Cili Api (Squid in Coconut and Tumeric Gravy) (top pic) — caught my attention.
There is also a good selection of meat dishes such as the Kari Daging Cincang, ayam goreng (fried chicken) and a variety of fish dishes.
Apart from that, the warung also serves Anak Ikan Kembung Goreng Berlada (fried baitfish) as a side dish.
The nasi campur spread was quite good and I decided to give the warung’s Gulai Lemak Sotong and Paru Goreng Berlada a shot.
My meal came up to RM7.50 with an additional RM3 for a bottle of sugar cane juice.
Taste-wise, the dishes were pretty decent.
I found the squid cooked in gulai lemak a bit too rubbery (overcooked) and the best dishes from my meal were the fried baitfish and Paru Goreng Berlada.
While the quality of the food here is debatable, I would rate Warung Cherry at 5 out of 10 on the Samo-scale.
This makan place opens daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, except on public holidays.
First of all am shocked and surprised it's illegal to run a stall underneath a bridge…where is law in Malaysian…where this country heading too…poor people who have stall in normal housing arena are summons for license but here…hello what's happening in this country
Does it mean anyone could open a restaurant under a flyover now, ignoring health and safety?
