Think steak and the next thought may most likely be, “it is too expensive”.
The dish is an occasional meal a person seeks at steak houses or at a fancy restaurant.
Inspired by New York’s fast pace and its residents’ need for simple yet quick meals, a restaurant in the Klang Valley has mimicked an American diner to give you its rendition of an appetising and affordable meal, which also includes affordable cuts.
NY Steak Shack gives you a selection of steak, including ribeye steak (top pic) for only RM27.45 for 100gm and RM34.87 for 200gm while T-bone steak is RM38.05, all served with a choice of sauce and sides.
The restaurant is the brainchild of Revenue Valley, the company behind the Tony Roma’s franchise and Manhattan Fish Market.
The restaurant’s layout of bright lights, black tables and chairs, with waiters dressed casually with an American flag bandanna, tries its best to follow the atmosphere of an American diner.
All it needs now is some neon lights, high stools at a milkshake bar and maybe a jukebox playing old school tunes.
Introduced last year, the restaurant first opened in Mid Valley Megamall, and is now operating in Sunway Pyramid and IOI City Mall Putrajaya.
There are plans to expand into four more locations this year.
Just like in an American diner, you have milkshakes, burgers, meat and more meat.
Since it opened its doors in the Klang Valley, the restaurant has welcomed streams of curious and hungry customers.
The most sought after meals are its steaks and burgers, all of which are recipes of NY Steak Shack operations manager Rayyan Irwan, who has been in the food and beverage business for many years, enough to sharpen his skills behind the kitchen and managing a restaurant.
“Recipes are my own. I experimented in the kitchen and came up with recipes for each selection of meal in the menu,” he said.
He takes inspiration from the taste and simple yet tasty meals of restaurants in New York.
“It was a trial and error thing and I made sure to offer tasty food for our customers,”he said.
He added that there was consistency in food quality and taste as cooks were given proper training and the standard operating procedures when preparing food was continuously practised.
From July last year, Rayyan collected data from customers to find out the changes they wanted to see.
“The most drastic request was to add in non-beef food into the menu,” he said.
This month, NY Steak Shack introduces a new menu, with more than 20 more options comprising meat, salad and pasta made-to-order with the freshest ingredients.
The new menu is a thoughtful extension for customers.
Start your meal with a snack, and the Soda Mushroom with Honey Mustard is a sure bet.
The Just Wings dish features chicken wings coated with NY Steak Shack’s secret sauce.
The savoury sauce has a hint of spice, which is great with the meat.
Try dipping the chicken wing into some garlic aioli sauce, as it enhances the flavour.
If you come in pairs, the fried platter with Honey Fried Chicken, Fulton’s fish fillet and calamari, fried to order with grilled corn on the cob and choice of two sauces, all for RM34.87, is good for sharing.
As Rayyan said, only the freshest ingredients are used, as evident in the fish fillet, calamari and chicken.
Calamari lovers will be happy to note that not only is it fresh but crunchy on the outside and easily chewed.
We were served the NY Steak Shack’s signature Southwest Chicken, topped with cheddar and a hefty pile of sweet and crispy onion.
Priced at RM20.03, this was perhaps my favourite out of all that was served.
The bread was nicely toasted, with an amazing sauce that boosts the taste of the chicken sandwich while the crispy onion gave it a little sweetness, which together with the sauce, made an enjoyable meal.
I would recommend this to first timers to the restaurant.
Apart from red meat, there’s also poultry and fish such as the Sizzling Chicken and Cheese, Grilled Tropical Chicken and Grilled Salmon.
There is also the soda battered Tangy Fish sandwich, crowned with special mustard sauce.
NY Steak Shack has Grilled Lamb Cutlets and Shoulder, with a choice of four popular sauces – Demi Glace, Black Peppercorn, Caramelised Onion and Button Mushroom.
Though the lamb cutlets had turned cold when it was served, the meat was still tender and juicy.
For those who want a lighter meal, the menu introduces two new pasta and salad options.
Pasta B is a creamy mushroom pasta, served with NY Steak Shack’s signature Southwest Chicken, while Garlic Pasta is promoted as the tasty “one and only pure vegetarian” option.
These salads are topped with either Honey Fried Chicken or Southwest Chicken, which are big portions, so you may want to share this with a friend or two.
Once you have indulged in the mouth-watering meals, quench your thirst with a selection of banana milkshake, with new flavours of wild berry, apple crumble or black forest (RM10.49).
If that is too much for you, try their selection of fizzy drinks such as Summer Pina Coco and Peach Blossom, which keep you cool on a hot day.
