IF YOU are looking for some refreshing cold treats minus the guilt to cool you down on a blazing hot day, KTZ (Kei Dak Sek) Kepong is the place to go to.
This simple and unassuming roadside stall in Kepong Baru is best known for its fruit-flavoured shaved ice desserts.
During a recent visit, my colleague and I had the Iced Frutti and Mat Toh Loh respectively.
The Mat Toh Loh (RM11.25), loosely translated as “everything”, features shaved ice drizzled with mango puree and sago, then topped with slices of kiwi, strawberry, mango and honeydew.

The Iced Frutti (RM7) (top pic) would appeal to those who want to enjoy something more natural and less sweet.
It features shaved ice drizzled with a lime and sour plum mix, then topped with cubes of fruits like watermelon, mango, kiwi and pineapple, as well as grass jelly (cincau).
My go-to dessert at KTZ Kepong is the Mango Loh (RM7.20), which is a mango-only version of the Mat Toh Loh.
The stall also offers strawberry, honeydew and kiwi variants of the same dessert, as well as a version topped with red bean and cashew nut.
Diners can even see their dessert being made before their eyes, as the dishes are prepared and fruits cut to order.
Those who prefer something warm can opt for the hot dessert (tong sui) instead.
Options include sweet peanut soup, black sesame soup, red bean soup and soya bean with beancurd sheet.
There’s also a good variety of dim sum, including both fried and steamed options.
For those who want a more fulfilling meal, KTZ Kepong serves dim sum and a small selection of noodle dishes.
The menu offers a good variety of dim sum, including steamed options such as siew mai (RM4.80 for three pieces), chee cheong fun and lo mai kai, as well as fried items such as tofu and crab shell filled with meat (RM4.45 per piece).
Also available is the fried pancake that is often served at the end of Chinese banquet dinners.
Personally, I feel that the quality of KTZ Kepong’s dim sum is on par with that of other dim sum restaurants in Kuala Lumpur.
Meanwhile, the noodle menu offers Hakka Minced Meat La Mein (RM7.80), Shrimp Wonton Soup La Mein (RM10.30) and Minced Pork Dumpling Soup La Mein (RM10.30).
KTZ Kepong is often packed with diners who want to savour the fruit-flavoured shaved ice desserts it is best known for.
City folk who prefer some air-conditioned comfort could instead drop by KTZ’s branch located in SS2, Petaling Jaya.
