Anuar’s Fish Head Curry,
No. 2, Lorong Ara Kiri 3,
Lucky Garden,
Bangsar,
Kuala Lumpur.
WITH their sleeves rolled-up and faces full of concentration, a group of men looked intense as they sat down.
The setting was not a boardroom but an unassuming stall in Lucky Garden, Bangsar and their focus was on a large serving of fish head curry.
From corporate heads to despatch boys, they were all there for Anuar’s Fish Head Curry, also known as Bangsar Fish Head Corner.
For almost four decades, this spicy dish of curry cooked with vegetables and the whole fish head has drawn a continuous stream of loyal customers.
Using spices and ingredients necessary for a good curry base, the South Indian cooking style is obvious when savouring Anuar’s fish head curry.
During a visit there recently, a colleague and I wanted our share of Anuar’s fish head curry as well as the fried chicken, which came highly recommended.
The choices here are limited, apart from the fish and chicken, you can have fried fish and squid as well as some lightly stir-fried bean sprouts.
While there are slight variations to the way fish head curry is cooked, with some cooks adding coconut milk for a creamier texture, at Anuar’s, the gravy is slightly sour from the tamarind paste.
Although I found it a tad sour, it was quite enjoyable with rice.
There is also a generous amount of okra to complement the dish.
You can either request the type of fish you want, or the staff will choose one depending on its size and the number of people dining.
I learned that the price for the fish head curry (top pic) can vary from RM20 to RM80.
The fish served here include mackerel and red snapper.
The star of the show, though, was the mamak-style fried chicken.
Although the pieces were small, each was perfectly seasoned and not dry after being deep-fried. .
With some bean sprouts, fish curry and warm rice, it was a satisfying meal for the amount we forked out.
Each piece of chicken cost RM2.50, while rice is an additional RM0.50.
Anuar’s Fish Head Curry operates from 8am until 5pm, Monday to Saturday.
It is located at No 2 Lorong Ara Kiri 3, Lucky Garden, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.
