THERE is a makan place in Jalan 17/9 in Section 17, Petaling Jaya that is worth checking out.
My buddy Alfa Charlie told me about the restaurant some time ago.
He said they had a wide variety of chap fun (economy rice) (top pic) dishes and prices range from RM5 to RM8 a meal.
As far as I know, this part of the Section 17 neighbourhood is home to a community of university students who are mostly out-of-towners.
The makan place in question is Chan Home Recipe (GPS N 03°07’19.6” E 101°38’07.0”) that opens daily for breakfast and lunch.
To verify Alfa’s claims, I decided to give it a try and headed straight to the shop.
I found a queue at the counter and observed an ample selection laid out.
From vegetables to fish and meat, all your fibre and protein needs were covered.
Best of all, the drinks here are bottomless, which means you can either have a glass of refillable plain water or Chinese tea at no cost.
As for my choice of food, I went straight for two meat dishes, foo chuk (beancurd sheets), kangkung and taufoo pok (bean curd).
My meal came to RM7 (which was not the student’s rate) and I was pretty happy with the spread.
The manner in which the food was prepared reminded me of home-cooked food, the kind that your mother would serve.
To cater to the large student population in the neighbourhood, the shop had to price their food affordably to compete with two other coffee shops along the same row.
As far as quality is concerned, I would say that this makan place has an edge over its competitors.
On the Samo-scale, I would rate Chan Home Recipe’s chap fun a 5 out of 10.
This is the writer’s personal observation and not an endorsement of Star Metro.
The address says 17/29 but in your notes it’s 17/9. Which is correct?
