An eatery in Alor Setar offers nasi lemak but serves a different meal instead.

ONE good makan place in Alor Setar, Kedah is Royale Nasi Kandar (N 06°07’11.1”, E 100°21’57.6”) located off Jalan Tunku Ibrahim near Pekan Rabu.

But, to the uninitiated, one might get confused with the rice dish that is served here.

I found this place while taking a walk around Pekan Rabu.

My Samo-instinct told me that Nasi Kandar Royale was worth checking out because of the large number of diners there.

My wife Michelle and I took a walk around Pekan Rabu and decided that it was best to have our fill at the nasi kandar joint before heading over to Kuala Kedah to board the ferry to Langkawi.

The signboard in front of the shop stated: “Royale Nasi Lemak”, which was in fact nasi kandar.

What makes this shop interesting is that the yellow-coloured rice served with traditional curried dishes is similar to the nasi kandar offerings from the north.

Even on a weekday, there was a considerably large number of customers queuing in front of the shop, waiting for their orders to be taken.

When my rice and the dishes I had ordered was served, it was obvious that what was placed in front of me was not nasi lemak.

A piece of fish and beef with rice for two including drinks came up to RM26.

It is typical for out-of-town visitors to pay slightly more for their food compared to the locals.

Seems like there is some form of “code of understanding” between the regulars and the shopowner.

My meal turned out to be quite tasty, so, paying slightly more for it was not an issue.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate Royale Nasi Kandar at 7.5.

This makan place opens daily for lunch and dinner.
