THERE is a curry pork rib noodle shop in Aman Suria, Petaling Jaya that is worth a try.
I came to know about this through my buddy Eddie “Reel Tales” Chua, who is a regular at the said makan place.
It’s called Bittergourd Noodle (GPS 3°07’30.2”N 101°35’44.3”E) off Jalan Bukit Mayang Mas. Getting to this place can be a little tricky.
You can either take the ramp before the Damansara toll exit on the Sprint highway or use the “back way” through Kampung Cempaka near SS2 in Petaling Jaya.
Sway Kou dumplings are among the side dishes available at the restaurant.
Okay, getting back to the food, Eddie and I paid a visit to Bittergourd Noodle and the first thing that caught my attention were the curry noodles with pork ribs (RM8.80).
You can have this in soup or dry gravy, and I must say that when it comes to taste, this particular noodle dish is quite impressive.
The phai kuat (pork ribs), although a bit dry for my taste, was palatable.
I found the curry gravy quite acceptable, flavourful and the portions are pretty decent.
My only beef with the curry mee is the cockles.
Instead of serving it half-cooked, all I got was a couple of pieces that were overcooked and rubbery.
As a precaution against Hepatitis A, consumption of raw or half-cooked shellfish such as cockles has severely declined among health-conscious Malaysians in recent times.
The irony is this: to enjoy cockles, it’s best to have them medium-rare.
Okay, how did the noodles fare?
On a scale of 1-10, I would rate the pork rib noodles a 6.
Other than curry mee, there’s the house dish – bittergourd noodles and other side dishes that you could try.
This makan place opens for lunch and dinner and its best to get there early as parking lots are limited.
