THERE are fewer than a dozen makan places in the Klang Valley that specialises in chau shue fun (fried sweet potato noodles).
And the people who are really good in preparing this traditional dish are the Hokkiens.
I first came to know of this some years back when I was brought to a backlot restaurant off Old Klang Road in Kuala Lumpur.
The noodle dish was so good, I even wrote a story about the shop.
Another makan place that serves shue fun is in Sungai Way, Petaling Jaya.
Recently, KY Lau, my father in-law made mention of a food outlet in Pusat Bandar Puchong that specialises in stir-fried noodle dishes such as pek ker (rice sticks) and shue fun.
I took the opportunity to try out this place and take Michelle, my wife to a lunch treat after her long business trip to the US.
The shop, called Restoran Hokkien (GPS N 03 02 735, E 101 37 368), was not hard to locate as it is right behind the IOI Boulevard in Puchong.
We made our way to this shop and found it nearly empty and had the entire dining area to ourselves.
And when lunch was served, I found the Shue Fun (RM7 for a small plate) just average.
It lacked punch as dried shrimps, a vital ingredient in this dish was used sparingly.
Although the portions were generous, I would say the makan experience was barely memorable.
The Pek Ker (RM7 for a small dish) was served next.
We found it to be good tasting, but again, we had some better ones in KL and Petaling Jaya. The dish served here was simply overshadowed by them.
The restaurant also serves signature dishes like the Steamed Chinese Carp Head.
We didn’t have a chance to savour it and would save it for a follow-up trip.
Restoran Hokkien is located near Jalan Kenari 18a in Pusat Bandar Puchong and open for lunch and dinner daily.
