THE art of listening is an acquired skill. In my case, it is the little details that I need to pay more attention to.
Sometime back, my wife Michelle told me about a pan mee stall in USJ 2/2B, Subang Jaya.
She said the fare is quite decent and comparable to the many pan mee stalls in the township.
For me, the benchmark for a good bowl of pan mee is a stall located inside a corner coffee shop in SS19, Subang Jaya.
So, since I had a whole week off, I tried to locate the said stall in USJ 2.
Now, the trick is this: there are two coffee shops in this part of the neighbourhood.
Spice it up: Extra ikanbilis and some hotsambal complementsthe pan mee dish.
I ended up in Kedai Kopi USJ 2 and met Frankie, the owner of a Yong Tau Foo stall.
“Eh towkay, this place got pan mee ah?,” I asked.
“Bradder, got la, but not so good. The lady who used to run it moved out…,” Frankie said.
“Aiya! So disappointing one ah! Waste my parking ticket la,” I replied.
So, with the new information, I sent a message to my wife on my cellphone.
Her immediate reaction was: “Eh, where got! I just had a bowl there last week.”
Hidden away: Le Kwang coffee shop in USJ 2, Subang Jaya.
With the clue, I put two and two together and realised that I was searching for the pan mee at the wrong coffee shop.
What she meant was a stall managed by an elderly lady in Le Kwang coffee shop at the other end of the shoplots in USJ 2/2B.
Now, with the new information, I decided to head back to theneighbourhood.
Fortunately, Le Kwang coffee shop was open and it does take some effort to locate the pan mee stall.
It was hidden from plain sight, but I managed to spot it.
I went on to order a bowl of pan mee with soup.
A foreign worker who took my order asked if I wanted the dry or spicy version, I told her to stick to the original pan mee.
Within minutes, my bowl of piping hot noodles was delivered.
At RM4.50 for a small serving, I must say that I was impressed with the quality of the food.
In a small package, the noodles are just nice for a late breakfast treat.
The sambal dip was good and to spice things up a bit, there’s some fried ikan bilis to go with it.
On the samo-scale, I would rate it at 7.5 out of 10.
