IN this week’s edition of the food trail, we continue with my cycling adventure to Kuala Lumpur’s city centre and a discovery in USJ7, Subang Jaya.
I was tasked to cover a RapidKL ‘Car-Free Day’ event where a group of cyclists were given the opportunity to board the LRT from Kelana Jaya station in Petaling Jaya to the Seri Rampai station near Wangsa Maju in Kuala Lumpur.
My plan was simple: cycle from my home in USJ 26 towards the Asia Jaya station and board the train to Seri Rampai.
The RapidKL people had made it an exception for folding bicycle owners to board their commuter trains off peak-hours.
So, this was a public relations exercise for the company and being ahead of time, I arrived at the LRT station way ahead of the VIP cyclists.
To me, it’s work first and fun later.
A media conference took place at the station and before I knew it, it was time to head home.
I took the train to the University station and rode along the Federal Highway motorcycle lane towards Subang Jaya.
Food was served during the event, but I wasn’t really impressed with the spread and with some energy bar still in my stomach, I held on for the ride home.
The idea was simple, cycle towards USJ 1 in Subang Jaya, then take a detour to the USJ 7 food court.
This place is known for a good variety of food from Johor.
Now, what caught my attention was the gerai ‘Mat Bess’ on lot 15 in the hawker centre (GPS N 03 02 871, E 101 35 372) that offers Nasi Beriyani and a host of dishes from down south.
Without hesitation, I ordered a plate of Mee Rebus Muar at RM4.50 per plate.
And after cycling for nearly 30km, I’ve worked out a good appetite.
A middle-aged man who runs the stall came up to me.
He asked: “Hello bang, basikal lipat ya? Ada GPS lagi! Wah.. bagus..” (Hello brother, you have a folding bicycle equipped with a GPS? That’s good!).
We exchanged a conversation while I savoured the Mee Rebus.
Now, I have to say that the noodle dish is one of the best I’ve tasted around the neighbourhood.
On the Samo-scale, this one is an easy 7 out of 10.
Mat Bess Nasi Beriyani Gam opens for lunch daily, but if you want to give this place a shot, it’s best that you head there early.
For directions, do a search on ‘Medan Selera USJ 7’ on Google Maps.
