PUN Chun restaurant in Bidor, Perak, is well-regarded for their Ngap Thui Meen (Duck thigh noodles).

And to the frequent traveller using the KL-Ipoh trunk road, this makan place needs no introduction.

Back in its heyday, this restaurant was famous for hosting wedding dinners for the local community and was also a popular break stop for North-bound express busses.

Business saw a decline with the North-South expressway bypassing Bidor town in the late-1980s, but Pun Chun remained steady as a well-established eatery.

As a matter of fact, the restaurant is also famous for their Kai Chai Phang (chicken biscuits) and wantan mee.

Now, fast-forward to present day developments in the Klang Valley — Pun Chun has opened a branch in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam.

I came to know about this through my colleague Joseph Loh. He said Ngap Thui Meen is as authentic as its main branch in Bidor.

“Eh Sam ah, you should give it a try lah!,” urged Loh.

So, recently, I took up an invitation by SK Yeong, a long-distance leisure cyclist who had organised a ride from Bandar Sunway in Petaling Jaya to Kota Kemuning.

My wife Michelle and I joined 10 other cyclists on the trip to the township and one of the highlights was breakfast at Pun Chun noodle in Jalan Anggerik Villa.

It was short ride and it took us no more than 10km to get to this makan place.

Immediately, we placed an order for a bowl of Ngap Thui Meen (RM7.50) and a glass of iced barley (RM1.30).

Service was prompt as the noodles were delivered piping hot.

I must say that the taste is as authentic as the ones you get in Bidor.

The duck meat is tender and with a tasty herbal soup, we polished the bowl clean before setting out on the road back to our home in Subang Jaya.
