KEE Hong restaurant in Kapar near Klang is a makan place that needs little introduction.
This is an eatery that is packed to the brim during lunch and is known throughout the Klang Valley with some customers coming all the way from as far as Singapore.
I came to know of this place through reader K.W. Low, who lives in Bandar Botanic in Klang.
Low suggested the makan place after reading about Soon Leong restaurant in Kapar town.
In his email, he said, “Hey Samo, you should try Kee Hong restaurant which is located behind the main road.
“They are famous for their steamed garoupa head and small stingray.”
As a matter of fact, I came across this restaurant a year ago after returning from a bicycle ride in Sekinchan, Selangor.
It was packed with diners, however, and we decided that it was best to move on.
Now, fast-forward to the present, when I recently had the chance to makan at this restaurant with my wife and in-laws.
We ordered a few dishes — the steamed Garoupa in lime sauce (with plenty of lime juice, Thai fish sauce and lots of sliced red onions), stingray curry, deep fried nurse shark (house special), stir-fried pork belly and two vegetable dishes. All this came up to RM150.00 for five persons.
As far as quality of food is concerned, I must say that the steamed Garoupa head was the best of the lot.
The taste was unique and since fresh ingredients were used, the quality of the dishes at Kee Hong restaurant is top-notch.
Now, compared to Soon Leong restaurant (another household name in Kapar), the fried shark dish was just so-so.
I can’t say much about the stingray cooked in curry because the gravy was pretty thin.
Highly recommended is the steamed stingray with lime sauce which is similar to the Garoupa head.
Kee Hong restaurant is located in Jalan Dato Tahir off the town’s main road.
