Pork innards soup also one of the eatery’s signature dishes.
ONE of my latest finds is an obscure coffeeshop located in Sungai Way, Petaling Jaya.
This place specialises in chee chap thong (pork innards soup) and woo thou fan(yam rice).
It was introduced to me by Lee Hong Leng, an old friend and makan kaki.
Lee said he came to know about Sun Tho Yuen (N 03 05.305, E 101 37.031) coffeeshop through his friend Ah Yau, the head honcho of Nanyang Siang PauChinese daily’s photo department.
“The photo room guys took me to this coffeeshop that specialises in yam rice and I have been going back there as a regular customer ever since,” said Lee.
After hearing about how good the yam rice was, I gave it a go by following Lee to the coffeeshop in Jalan SS9A/2, Petaling Jaya.
It was not easy to find the makan place and the road leading to it was narrow.
Parking space is also scarce, so, it is advisable to car pool or, better still, walk or cycle.
And to the uninitiated, the coffeeshop is usually packed during lunch hour.
People who know of its existence take great effort to secure a table in order to dine there.
Alright, getting down to the gist of things, I found the yam rice really tasty.
It was full of flavour and seeing that the cook was an old-timer, he did not stinge on the main ingredients.
The rice was also soft and there was a ‘secret weapon’ that went with it: a sambalpaste.
This was perhaps the first woo thou fan stall that served rice with such a gravy as most would just settle for ground chilli sauce.
What was also good here was the chee chap thong and the lou chee keok (braised pork trotters). And true to the stall’s reputation of serving cheap and tasty food, our four dishes and yam rice came up to RM25.
Lee said he was very pleased with the fare and would recommend his friends tomakan at Sun Tho Yuen coffeeshop.
The woo thou fan stall opens daily for lunch, except on Mondays.
