SEKINCHAN in Selangor is a place worth visiting if you have the time.

As the state’s “rice bowl”, this area is known for its rice fields as well as fruit orchards.

Sekinchan is also famous for its seafood restaurants.

Sometime in July last year, I led a group of cyclists who rode from Kuala Selangor to Sekinchan and one of the main highlights was lunch at Restoran Cha Po Tion recommended by Khaw Lye Hock, an old-timer and fellow bicyclist.

Khaw said he read some rave reviews of this makan place in a food blog.

We decided to give it a try and also celebrated one of the cyclist’s birthday there.

Recently, I made a follow-up visit with my wife Michelle and found that the pricing and quality of the food served in this place was second to none.

All we did was order three dishes: the sweet and sour sole, shark meat soup and kung po cuttlefish.

Our bill came to RM48 including a pot of Chinese tea.

On the quality of the food, let?s begin with the sweet and sour sole.

The portions were generous and I must say that the fish was fresh. Although it was not meaty, I had nothing to complain about the sweet-tasting flesh which had a fine` texture.

Meanwhile, the kung-po cuttlefish came as a surprise. Instead of being rubbery, I found the cephalopod to be soft and tender ? complemented with the kung-po gravy.

As for the shark meat soup (a house specialty), we simply loved the tangy taste of the soup.

So for its overall quality, I’d give Cha Po Tion a 9 out of 10 on the Samo-scale.

This place opens for lunch and dinner daily except for certain Chinese festivals. It is located in Jalan Bagan Sekinchan (GPS coordinates N 03 30.380, E 101 05.853) off Federal Route 5 on the Klang-Teluk Intan road.
