THE Cendol Bakar sold in Assam Jawa is a popular draw.

For those travelling to Kuala Selangor via the Latar Expressway, this is one of the stopovers, about 11km away from the highway exit.

Villagers here serve thirsty travellers and one popular offering is the cendol.

The iced dessert, Cendol Bakar, is something I found out about when I went to the Kuala Selangor Nature Park to try out my new Canon EF400mm F5.6L telephoto lens.

After capturing some images of birds on camera, I decided to drive home via Latar and saw a long line of vehicles near a roadside stall, with a big banner saying “Cendol Bakar Drive Through”. There were a few Rela personnel directing traffic.

Cendol Bakar : The palm sugar in the dessert is roasted

However, it wasn’t until recently that I made a trip back to this place with my wife Michelle to savour the dessert.

This place is packed during weekends and we were lucky to find a parking spot.

We had to queue up for more than half-an-hour to buy two bowls of cendol, for RM2 per serving.

What is interesting is that the stall serves “bottomless” dessert, which means you can ask for second and third helpings, free-of-charge.

When we finally sampled the cendol, Michelle said: “Eh, this one no great shakes la…,” She was not impressed with the cendol and said the one sold at Borhan Cendol in Pasir Penambang, Kuala Selangor tasted better.

As for me, I found the Cendol Bakar just okay. It lacked that “oomph!”

The santan (coconut milk) used was a tad too light for my liking and on the Samo-scale, I would rate this place at 4.5 out of 10.

Another thing is that the cendol is not roasted as in “bakar” but just that the palm sugar is prepared in such a manner.

Besides cendol, there are some stalls selling rojak and Asam Laksa nearby but I found the environment a little dirty, and as such this was not the place for lunch.

This stall is located off the Klang – Teluk Intan road and the GPS coordinates are N 03 18.221, E101 17.826 and opening hours are from 9am-6pm daily.
