PREPARE to get your fingers greasy if you are making a trip to the Burger & Ribs restaurant in Section 14, Petaling Jaya.
Nestled between offices along a row of shoplots in the commercial area, the outlet cooks up a mean rack of ribs that you have to pick at without utensils.
The restaurant itself has an unassuming clean-cut interior, with cement flooring coupled with white walls.
White tables line the sides of the floor space, creating a pathway in the middle to the bright red counter where you place your orders.
“It is a self-service concept that customers took awhile to get used to,” said owner Joyce Chuah, who started the business with her husband Leslie Chan out of passion for grilled ribs.
Chan previously worked for a few years in a restaurant chain in Hawaii specialising in ribs and on returning to Malaysia, discovered that there were not many places with good pork ribs.
“That is why we decided to venture into this business. We serve food that we enjoy and everything is made from high-quality ingredients,” she said.
The star of the fuss-free menu is the BBQ Iberico Loin Ribs (RM89.90 for a full slab and RM59.90 for a half-slab) that is air-flown from Spain.
According to Chuah, the meat is marinated overnight and there is a short waiting time for the ribs to be grilled to perfection, resulting in a rack that has a tender texture with the meat separating easily from the bone.
Those who prefer more chew to their meats can also opt for the Original BBQ Pork Ribs (RM52.90 for a full slab or RM32.90 for half-slab).
“We also recently introduced the BBQ Baby Back Ribs that is also imported from Spain,” said Chuah.
They also pride themselves with their signature Iberico Burger (RM38.90) and like the rest of their burgers, the patties are all home-made.
“What is different here is that the burgers are served on a piece of waxed paper in a custom-made cardboard tray that customers can take home and re-use for their next visit.
“We believe in going green so we offer a RM1 rebate when they bring back the tray. We have a recycle bin for all of our cardboard trays and plastic bottles. We have retirees collect these items so that they can sell it to recycling centres,” she said.
Besides several other pork burgers like the Hawaiian Pork Burger, Beef and Pork Burger and Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Burger, there is also the option of the BBQ Chicken Burger and Vegetarian Burger.
Instead of a patty, the chicken burger is served with a whole piece of boneless drumstick while the vegetarian burger has a crispy falafel patty that is also home made.
