READER Jimmy Liew from Singapore wants to know if there are any good places for wantan mee around Petaling Jaya.
He writes: “Dear Samo, I am a friend of Uncle Chan who met you during a cycling trip in Penang some years ago.
“He told me that you are the man to look for when it comes to food and I am planning to visit my in-laws in Petaling Jaya. Can you point me to some makan places that serve wantan mee?
“Please help because I am going to spend at least three weeks in your country where the food is good.”
Okay Jimmy, as a good host, I will share my favourite wantan mee stalls and hope you will have an enjoyable stay here.
If you are around Section 17 in Petaling Jaya, check out Lucky Coffee Shop (N 03 07.744, E 101 38.120) off Jalan 17/42.
This is my regular noodle place and if you love chicken feet, ask for the Toong Ku Kai Keok meen (wantan noodles with braised chicken feet and mushrooms). Prices are very reasonable at RM5 and above.
Just down the road from Lucky Coffee Shop is Hong Seng Coffee Shop.
Now, don’t be fooled by the long and steady queue outside the chicken rice stall.
I gave their Kai Fan here a try and it’s just hype.
The real “jewel” in the crown at this makan place is the stall that serves Hakka and wantan mee.
There is a middle-aged man who sells it and the char siew that goes with the noodles is one of the best around.
And at RM6.50 per serving, you can’t go wrong.
Another makan place that is worth mentioning is the K. Intan noodle shop in Jalan 17/10 (N 03 07.327, E 101 38.134)
Noteworthy are the handmade noodles that are full-bodied and extra crunchy.
But, if you are a char siew lover like me, the meat dish here is hopeless.
A typical serving of wantan mee at this outlet costs RM6.10.
Now, I’ve saved the best for last, especially if you love to watch noodle aerobatics.
The makan place in Paramount Garden is really worth visiting.
The place is called Char Siew Zhai (N 03 06.368, E 101 37.529) and it is a popular haunt for wantan mee lovers.
Prices are a little bit steep, but watching the cook doing a noodle toss and catching it in mid-air is a sight to behold.
Well, there you have it, some of the best makan places for wantan mee in Petaling Jaya.
As a rule of thumb, try to get there early to avoid disappointment.
