MUSTAFA Cendol in Kuantan, Pahang, is a makan stall that needs no introduction.
It is located along Jalan Teluk Sisik and opens daily to serve the town’s residents.
This week, we take a look at a few makan places in the East Coast that are worth trying out beginning with a cendol stall.
I recently took a trip to the state capital with my wife and her family to visit their grand-uncle during Chinese New Year.
To get there, we took a two-and-a-half-hour drive along the East Coast Highway from Gombak to Kuantan.
The first agenda on our road trip was to find some good makan places and Vincent, my brother-in-law who had worked and lived in Kuantan for a few years, took us to Mustafa Cendol (N 03 48.935, E 103 20.548).
By the time we got there, the stall was already packed with customers.
“Eh bro, you must try the mee rojak ayam, it’s pretty good!” said Vincent.
This came at RM6 a plate, which is no different than what I would pay in the Klang Valley.
Taste-wise, I would rate the mee rojak ayam a 3 out of 10 on the Samo-scale.

Why? The fried chicken that came with it was as hard as a piece of Martian rock.
If you wore dentures, it would take you a day to finish eating the ayam goreng.
The saving grace here is the cendol (RM1.70), which is pretty tasty.
I love the full-flavoured santan that came with it and rate Mustafa’s cendol 7 out of 10.
Apart from the cendol, the stall serves a variety of other icy desserts that you can choose from.
