Klang-style Bak Kut Teh

THERE is a new makan place in SS2, Petaling Jaya and it is said to have decent Klang-style Bak Kut Teh.

And if you are a regular makan kaki in this part of the township, the first thing you would notice is Restoran 1 Bak Kut Teh on Jalan SS2/67.

It is also a classy place to eat with air-conditioning and a place for smokers at the front portion of the premise.

New joint: The 1 Bak Kut Teh Restaurant on Jalan SS2/67, Petaling Jaya.

When I got to this place, the first thing I noticed was the crowd who were mostly towkays and some very sharp-dressed Ah Bengs.

I was not intimidated by the crowd and placed my order when a Myanmar waiter approached me.

When I asked him what was good, he told me that most of the dishes were sold out.

Whatís left was the yat chee kuat (pork knuckle) and pun fei sau (pigís belly).

I took a shot at both the recommendations.

Service was prompt as the dishes came with a plate of hot rice.

To my surprise, there wasnít much soup to go around as Bak Kut Teh is traditionally a soupy dish.

Heavy meal: (Clockwise) Pork belly and pork knuckles prepared Klang style and served with rice.

My bowl of choice morsels came with a thick gravy and filled with garlic and two pieces of shiitake mushrooms.

Now, this makan place has hit my achilles heel.

I have a weakness for garlic and they got me with a clove of braised garlic which melted onto my rice.

Even the gravy tasted rich in garlic and that really made my day.

As for the meat, well, it was too soft for my liking but the saving grace was the pork knuckle which was pretty decent.

Later, I asked the lady at the counter about the dish and was told that the recipe was from Klang.

She asked if the food was okay and I complemented her on the garlic and rich taste of the gravy.

My only grouse was the excessive use of monosodium glutamate which made the meat broth sharp-tasting.

Later, my big boss Ah Wai Kor had taken the bunny out of the hat by revealing the identity of the outletís owner.

I vouched not to tell as you have to try this place out to judge for yourself.
