Chinese porridge at its best

FOR years, I have been trying to do a story on one of Kuala Lumpur’s oldest makan stalls.

And if you love Chinese porridge, Low Yau Kee is the place to go.

This stall has been around for decades and the surrounding areas of Jalan Tun H.S. Lee has changed so much over the years.

The owner of the porridge stall has made a strategic alliance with Soong Kee beef noodles by sharing its real estate.

Old time favourite: Chee chap chuk is Low Yau Kee’s hallmark dish
When I was a teenager, I used to eat at the five-foot way where the stall is located and there was a chee chap thong (pork soup) stall including a kwon lou har meen seller in the same row.

Sadly, the chee chap seller is no longer seen trading in the area.

Now, highly recommended is the chee chap chuk (pork innards porridge) that is sold at RM4.50 a bowl.

This is considerably affordable by Kuala Lumpur’s standards and if you have a big appetite, you will end up with a second helping.

Just remember to ask for extra chee yuk yeen (pork meatballs) which this stall is famous for serving.

What’s nice, is the char cheong (deep fried pig’s intestines) which is crunchy.

My wife Michelle found it to be a bit salty and the only place that is comparable to Low Yau Kee is Wong Kee porridge stall in Petaling Street.

Strategic alliance: The porridge stall is working together with Soong Kee beef noodles to draw in more food lovers
If you love watt kai (steamed chicken), this is also the place to indulge.

A bowl of porridge with chicken on the side is roughly about RM6.50 or more depending on the portion.

I found the oyster sauce used in the dish to be very salty which actually ruined the taste of the tender steamed chicken.

Low Yau Kee opens daily from 5pm to 10pm and if you want to savour the porridge here, it is best to get there early as seats and tables are very limited.

This stall is located in front of Soong Kee beef noodles in Jalan Tun H.S. Lee and is not hard to locate. Just find the Maybank branch here and you will hit the jackpot.
